23 months

The baby phase has been ending for quite a while, but my baby will soon be 2!  He is learning to hold 2 fingers up and say, "I'm two," but if you ask him how old he's going to be, he always says 4.  What?  Why?  It's so funny and now he thinks it's hilarious.

The kid's skills all around have increased this past month.  He has friends who are so good with coordination; they are able to go up and down stairs, run, etc. without help.  J is now going up and down our concrete stairs outside and runs all around with much more grace.  He did fall twice on the side of our house where there are different size steps and got a gouge the first time on his forehead and then scraped his forehead, nose, lips, and chin on the second fall.  Dan was wild.  He is very, very protective and it killed him to see his son fall twice on his face.  He is also climbing on everything and doing really well with it, but I do see the carefulness in his face.

The grammar skills are growing like crazy.  I don't really correct his grammar, but Dan has a bit.  As of the last 2 weeks he uses she, he, her and him appropriately and I never taught him.  He still says, "mommy get you"...so you for me and stuff like that, but otherwise I'm shocked at his skills.  He is also to start telling mini stories that are so cute and make sense.

Julian has been singing for a long time, but now he'll actually sing with the music or with me when I'm singing.  He used to stop if I started singing or I'd have to sing the first couple of words and then he'd fill in, but never together.  Now he'll sing full songs with accompaniment :)

The little guy is such a thinker.  I always point to things in books as I read and Dan just reads.  J is so into Richard Scarry at the moment and will go crazy looking around at all the things that daddy is reading if he's going to fast and he can't find it.  Unfortunately I got 5 LONG R.S. books and Dan and I were falling asleep trying to read them, so that slowed us down a bit...ha ha.  We have 3 of his books, but I'll only get 1 or 2 at a time from the library.

His fear of things seems to be expanding to all sorts of things.  He will not let Dan lift him to the ceiling to touch it.  He is afraid of dogs now because one snapped at him (we're thankful for this, but still pet lots of dogs).  Heights are a new fear now that he's climbing.  He'll call for me to help him a lot of the time.  There are more, but I can't think of them.

On the other hand, he is more adventurous than ever.  His BFF (a girl born on the same day as him and we'll have a double birthday party next month) is tough and adventurous, so she's taught him to wander around, climb, go go go!  ha ha.  I actually love it, though it's hard for me to keep up sometimes.

His need for being outside and burning off energy is crazy.  It was cold and rainy for 4 days and we didn't get out much and he was being more naughty that usual.  I used to be able to take Julian to the library or something, but the kid needs to run.  The past 3 days have been GORGEOUS!!! and J is a new man when he is running multiple times a day.  He'll push the boundaries still, but he won't be outright naughty.

Time outs are working so well still.  He now goes and sits himself in timeout (unless he is really upset) and stays put until I tell him it's over.  Julian explains his offense, says sorry, and then we pray and thank Jesus for already taking care of it and for reconciling our relationship with his love and for loving us so much.

Julian's prayers are getting much better, though he prays for the neighbor girls about 10 times a day...everytime we pray and more.  Out of the blue he'll say, "pray to Jesus?" and I was so thankful because we've been talking about just talking to Jesus anytime we want and just because...such as thanking him for the beautiful sunshine.  He's also singing fun sunday school songs that Dan grew up with and I've learned some motions from the internet, so he'll dance, sing and act out these songs.  I didn't grow up with Psalty the Psalm book, but "If I were a Butterfly" is the cutest song and we're both learning the words and actions this week.  Other favorites are "dem bones", "the wise man built his house upon the rock", "joshua fought the battle of jericho", "who built the ark", "who did swallow jonah", etc.  I didn't think I'd be into kids songs, but Julian loves them and I'm so excited watching him, so it's very fun.

One song that I'm getting sick of is William Tells Overture--Finale.  J calls it the horsey race song and wants it played all the time.  I have found different versions on Spotify (one Hans Zimmer from the recent Lone Ranger movie) and that was interesting to see his reaction.  He just takes it in.  We talk about all the instruments and he can identify certain ones.  He loves to see orchestras play on youtube and tell me all the instruments.  I'm finding he's a detail person more than a big picture guy.

He's still a great eater and is becoming a better drinker.  He eats the main cereal of New Zealand, WheatBix but I bought some "rice krispies" (they call them rice bubbles) to make treats.  There was a dinosaur on the box so J only wants to eat those for breakfast.  Uh oh...we're entering "gotta be entertained by my food" possibly?  He was being pokey with his grilled cheese so I took a star cookie cutter and he ate it all instantly...even the cut off crust parts. hmmm...

So my baby is becoming a growing boy.  He still uses a pacifier at night and requires one of us to stay at kids church or he'll have a major meltdown.  We're now talking about what big boys do and what babies can't do.  His big phrase is "by self", so we say, "yes, you can do that because you're a big boy."  We'll list all the things that big boys do and then say, big boys don't use pacis and big boys stay in kids church without mommy or daddy.  Problem is is that I help out in kids church and then there's a set back.  He also hasn't been the same since Dan has been back and gets clingy when he thinks we'll leave for any reason, anywhere.  He's my baby.

He is sleeping much better, but it's getting darker as autumn approaches.  He's been sleeping till 5:30 or past 6 (when his clock lights up), so that has been awesome!  He gets the concept of the clock, but I haven't enforced it.  For now I'm just sucking up time and snuggles with my first born and only child...Oh how I love him!

his BFF

It was a warm day, so he needed to dance in his nappy and new sandals (jandals).
