Last week Dan got sick with a cold and we all got it. I was on my own for the first time yesterday for a few hours while Dan played soccer. I felt awful, but thankfully J&M were good to me. Today has been good, but J has been whiny. He still requires me to sit by him until he falls asleep (we've never tried otherwise), but he was playing around and finally fell asleep a bit ago so I can write this post. Julian is sick still and teething. Yay for 2 year molars that will be appearing in the next few months. I hope sooner than later.
Anyway, to Miles' post.
Miles slept ALL THE TIME. Now he is much more alert and yesterday (June 2nd) he started to make eye contact with Dan and me. He tracks us and follows other objects. Otherwise not much else. I try to make time to talk to him and not just meet his needs, but I'm learning to juggle a newborn and toddler.
Nursing him is a breeze. I'm shocked at how easy it is. I'm so thankful since it was a nightmare with Julian. Miles does not pacify himself on me, but loves the pacifier. I wasn't going to give it for a few weeks, but with our visitors watching him, I gave them it just in case and he really likes it. Now it's hard for me to figure out when he's hungry and when he just wants to suck. Since we've all been sick I've been forcing him to nurse instead of take the paci since I was nervous he wasn't getting enough hydration.

I am not waking Miles to feed anymore but he is waking pretty regularly at 1:30 and 5:30. He's gone a couple times just feeding once at night and that was awesome. Problem is is that he's quite awake at 1:30ish. He is bright-eyed and wants to look at everything. It doesn't help that he was starting to pee through his diaper and need multiple changes in the night. Since then we've gone up a diaper size and no leaks.
Miles got used to being held when my in-laws were here, so he likes to be held quite a bit. Today I had him in the moby wrap while I got things done. I don't mind holding him a lot since he's my last baby and time goes quickly, but I'm trying to get him used to being set down in the boppy or swing so I can do some things without holding him. Today I was able to hang laundry while he stayed in his swing. I had the monitor to watch him and J played ball outside, so it worked out perfectly. Dan reminded me that I have a dryer, but I'd like to save on our electric bill since it will be insane with winter and having to heat our room.
Speaking of, Miles seems to be warm enough. We keep it at 64 F, but it's hard for me to figure out what to dress him in and what covers to use (tightly tucked...it's the NZ way. I know covers are not accepted in the US, but it works great and they can't move if tucked right.) We velcro swaddled one night but I felt badly for him since he likes to suck on his hands. Maybe I'll do it when he's a bit older.
He's starting to outgrow all his newborn clothing. Miles is also starting to get baby acne. J's was so bad and lasted so long, so I hope it's not like that. I thought with the cool weather that maybe we'd avoid it, but it's hot in our living room when the sun is out.
Miles is so strong. He can flip himself off me when I'm holding him upright on my chest. He picks up his head without effort and often fights me when I try to burp him. Speaking of burping, we started a supplement to help with gas...rhuger (rhubarb and ginger) and it seems to help, though I haven't been eating onions, beans, lentils, etc., so maybe that was the problem.
J was just long. Miles has a long torso and short legs. I wonder who he takes after and if he'll be a shorty like me (though I was the tallest in grade school) or tall like Dan. I miss having the length done at the doctor's office, but we'll have to measure him on our own and check those growth chart...even though they probably don't mean anything.
Well, not much to report...he's a newborn, but we are so in love with him!
Here are photos. Let me know if you cannot see them.
