On Sunday (two days ago) we were getting ready for church. Julian grabbed a toothbrush and started to brush and then left the bathroom. I told him he had to stay in the bathroom while brushing. He bolted and fell on his face. Blood was pouring from his mouth, Dan scooped up everything while I got a washcloth for J and got him settled in the car to take to the Emergency Department (called A&E here). Hadn't we just done this is July?
Well thankfully there was no line (queue) and we were triaged. The nurse said he'd try to fit us in. I didn't know what that meant, but I just say to myself, "I'm from a different country." We waited a long time and Dan just told me to take Miles back home. I left and decided to go to church but I had nothing on me (wallet, food, diapers, etc.) except my phone. I was a bit frazzled and a friend watched Miles while I cleaned all the blood off of me. After church I went back to the hospital. I couldn't find parking, so I parked where I could and stayed in the car with a sleeping Miles.
Dan text and said that they (ENT and a dental surgeon) said he had a laceration inside his cheek with a large flap, but it didn't need stitches. We were to put lidocane on it and give him tylenol. He was drooling and they were concerned that he wasn't swallowing, but said it was ok and sent him home.
Ugh, my kid never looked so sad/pathetic. His left cheek and upper lip were so swollen, he was drooling nonstop, couldn't eat or drink, blank stare from medicine and the worst, couldn't talk. Ugh. The worst was that he was in a lot of pain and was so scared to take the medicine. I had to be bad cop a lot. I was surprised when he actually went to sleep well at night.
Yesterday was awful. He was starving, thirsty, in pain, you name it...I had to plead with him to try drinking from a straw and insist he take his medicine. When he finally did eat (ice cream and Jello), he was so happy and started talking a bit. I looked in his mouth and there was a HUGE flap covering his left teeth. He couldn't bite down, just swallow. I was concerned, but they said the swelling would go down, but how often would he bite it and it just stay big? I know if I accidentally bite my cheek, I bite it for a week. The day sucked after that. J is in a new phase of toddlerhood and was already driving me insane the two days before this accident. Well, put hunger, thirst, pain, low blood sugar, overtired from medicine, etc. together with being 2 and it was unpleasent. He was screaming and screaming and I was setting boundaries and also trying to give grace for his poor soul. I was about to pick up Dan and take J to the hospital but he fell asleep in the car. I turned around and thought I could bring him in the house. Nope, he woke up. It was a nightmare session of trying to tell him he needed to sleep. We did our old routine of nap time (he doesn't nap anymore) and he refused to touch my skin, but he finally fell asleep after a few books. We finished the day...barely making it, but he was wide awake until 9:30.
Today was much better. He was still in pain and nervous to eat and only had a couple tantrums. He was back to using the toilet (he likes being a big boy) and didn't seem to be in as much pain. He was sore though and the flap looked nasty. I called the help line and they said I should see his GP. He was booked today, so I got in with the nurse practitioner. She gave him antibiotics and said that he should be drastically better in a couple days. I believe he will be since today was much better, but I do feel for that poor guy.
Tonight he didn't go down until 9:30 because he fell asleep to gummi bears cartoon at 2pm. He never falls asleep with tv on, but tylenol and ibuprofen does a number on him. I'm surprised he doesn't sleep all the day away.
Thankfully Miles is easy going. He just goes with the flow even if Julian is screaming. It makes life a lot easier for me.
